Sun Voyager - Sólfarið
The Sun Voyager, or Sólfarið, is one of Reykjavík’s most iconic landmarks. The sculpture is a beautiful steel work located on the city's scenic shoreline to illustrate the island nation's link to the ocean and exploration. Designed by Icelandic sculptor Jón Gunnar Árnason, the Sun Voyager captures the imagination with its sleek, Viking-ship-inspired form, reflecting the country's history and mythology. Sólfarið History
Jón Gunnar Árnason built the Sun Voyager in 1986 in response to a contest honoring the 200th anniversary of Reykjavík. Revealed in 1990, the dreamboat-symbolized sculpture represented freedom, hope, and discovery. Inspired by Iceland's Viking past, Árnason sought to produce a work honoring the past and inspiring hopes of discovery. Since then, the Solfar Sun Voyager sculpture has become a cherished emblem of the city and is still among the most photographed spots in Reykjavík.
What Does the Sun Voyager Represent?
Despite appearances, the Sun Voyager is not a Viking ship. Instead, it symbolizes a dreamboat—a mental vehicle for adventure and exploration. Location of the Sun Voyager
The sculpture is located along the city's Sæbraut coastal road and the structure provides visitors with some fantastic views of Mount Esja and Faxaflói Bay. The sculpture is a short 5-10min walk from Harpa Concert Hall and offers an easy stop for anyone that finds themselves wandering around downtown Reykjavík. A favored seafront walk, this path allows you to experience the city's waterside, especially at sunrise or sunset when striking backdrops cast rays of light and shadow.
For those driving, some street parking is available around the location, otherwise it's a short walk from many central Reykjavík hotels.
