About Vík – Iceland's Southernmost Village by the Sea
Vík í Mýrdal is the kind of place that's small in size but big on atmosphere. It sits right on the South Coast, hugged by cliffs on one side and endless black sand on the other. Despite its population of just over 300 people, it's a popular overnight stop for travelers exploring the south. And for good reason. Vík is surrounded by gorgeous natural beauty. You'll see Reynisdrangar sea stacks from the beach, Mýrdalsjökull glacier looming in the distance, and the wild Atlantic crashing into shore.
And yes, it gets dark here. With virtually no light pollution once you step away from the main road or the occasional streetlamp, it's a prime location for aurora viewing. But what really makes Vík special is the combination of accessibility and drama—you don't have to go far to find a dark, open spot with wide views of the sky. In fact, you could walk straight from your hotel to the beach in under 10 minutes and see the northern lights dancing above the sea.
Why Vík Is an Ideal Spot for Northern Lights Viewing
Vík hits that sweet spot between remote and accessible. You're not buried deep in the highlands or fighting Reykjavík's glow, instead you're in a village where the lights dim fast once you head toward the beach or take a stroll behind the church hill.
And then there's the scenery.
It's a beautiful sight to stand on the black sand of Víkurfjara Beach, one of the black sand beaches to see the auroras, and watch auroras flicker across the sky above Reynisdrangar sea stacks. The landscape here naturally amplifies the experience.
Unlike some beaches that are more difficult to reach after dark (I'm looking at you, Sólheimafjara), Vík offers easy access even late at night. You can literally grab your coat, step outside your guesthouse, and be on the beach before your hot chocolate cools. That kind of convenience, without sacrificing darkness, makes it one of the most relaxed places in Iceland to catch the auroras.
When to See the Northern Lights in Vík
The northern lights season in Vík follows the same rhythm as the rest of Iceland, typically running from late September through mid-April. The darkest, clearest nights between November and March tend to be the best months to see the northern lights in Iceland.
Between 10 PM and 2 AM is usually the best time to see the northern lights, the aurora sweet spot, but honestly, if the forecast looks good, I always start checking the skies as soon as it gets dark. Some of my most beautiful sightings happened at completely unexpected times, like around 9 pm on a perfectly clear October evening.
A few things to keep in mind:
- You need clear skies. Even a strong KP index can't punch through heavy cloud cover.
- Cold, crisp nights are your best friend. If the stars are out, you've got a chance.
- Use the forecast. I always check vedur.is and the “My Aurora Forecast” app for real-time cloud cover and solar activity.
Pro tip: If you're staying overnight, don't stress about staying up all night staring at the sky. Set an alarm for midnight, peek outside, and see what's happening. It's worth a little sleep disruption.

Where to Watch the Northern Lights in Vík
You've got a few prime options when it comes to viewing the colors of the aurora borealis in Vík.
Víkurfjara Black Sand Beach
This is the main beach that stretches out behind the town and it has beautiful panoramic views of the ocean and Reynisdrangar. It's only about a 5- to 10-minute walk from most hotels or guesthouses. And once you hit the beach, the town disappears behind you.
What I love about Víkurfjara, apart from the easy access from town, is how it opens to the sky with nothing blocking your view. You can see the sea stacks and cliffs to the west, a stretch of black sand to the east, and sky everywhere in between. There's also a gravel parking lot right by the beach, in case you're driving in from another area.
Although northern light views from Diamond Beach and Reynisfjara black sand beach northern light views are also phenomenal, Víkurfjara remains the most easily accessible black sand beach on the south coast to witness the northern lights.
Word of caution:This is still the open Atlantic. Stay well back from the waves — especially in the dark. Sneaker waves are a thing here, and I'd hate for it to ruin your magical aurora moment.
The Church Hill
The iconic red roof Vík church, perched on the hill above the village, is not just pretty during the day. The view from up here at night is wide open and slightly elevated, making it a great spot for spotting northern lights as they rise over the sea or sweep inland over the mountains. It's also usually less windy than the beach (a huge plus on colder nights).
Behind the Gas Station (Seriously!)
It might sound odd, but the area behind the N1 gas station is surprisingly dark and gives you a good view of the sky without leaving town. This is where I've gone when I want a quick check on conditions without committing to a full beach walk.
Where to Stay in Vík for Easy Aurora Access
You don't need to stay in a remote beat-up cabin to get a good aurora experience, Vík has plenty of great accommodation options that put you close to the action while still offering all the comforts of a good aurora hotel.
- Hotel Kría – Stylish, modern, and just a few minutes' walk to the beach. The big windows in the rooms mean you might even catch the aurora without leaving your bed (it's happened).
- Vík Apartments – Great if you want your own space with a kitchen and room to spread out. Just remember to check the sky through the living room window before turning in.
- Hótel Vík – Right in the heart of the village, this long-standing favorite has recently been updated. It’s super convenient for late-night aurora spotting, and many rooms have views toward the cliffs or the coastline — perfect for a quick sky check before bed.
- The Barn – A favorite among younger travelers and budget-conscious adventurers. It should be noted that the Barn is located a short 8 minute drive outside of town but does offer incredible views toward the mountains and sea.
How to Get to Vík
Vík is about 190 kilometers (roughly 2.5 hours) southeast of Reykjavík along the Ring Road. It's an easy and stunning drive, especially during daylight hours when you pass waterfalls like Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss along the way.
If you're chasing the aurora, spending the night is a must. Trying to drive back to Reykjavík in the middle of the night, in icy road conditions, is not a fun or safe plan. Stay the night, enjoy a warm meal at a local restaurant like Suður-Vík or The Soup Company, and let yourself settle in. You'll be glad you did.

Some places just hit differently and Vík is definitely one of them. Seeing the Northern Lights here feels deeply personal, it may have to do with the surrounding cliffs and mountains that hug the town but Vík is simply one of those places where you can sense the calm.
Which is why, in my opinion, this place is such a gem to experience the northern lights. You can head to Víkurfjara (and that's my best recommendation with the least light pollution) or head up to the church for a gorgeous view of the aurora borealis.
